Laying Patterns

There are many different patterns in which patio paving can be laid from chess-board fashion through ‘tudor bond’ to totally random arrangements limited only by your imagination.

Please note that especially where a patio or path comprises multiple sizes of slabs, the exact quantity of each will depend upon a number of factors including actual shape, finite dimensions, ratio of the sides to one another and whether cuts will need to be made which can generate an amount of wastage.

Stansted Paving can assist you in estimating the quantities you need for your project but to do this as accurately as possible it will help if you can provide a fully dimensioned accurate plan of the area to be covered. But please note that we do ask you to check our calculations and make sure that you have enough material to complete your project before you start.

We can provide you with copies of some of the more popular laying patterns onto which you can draw your patio, path etc before you start to make sure your quantities are correct, so feel free to ask for a copy when you place your order.

We hope the following patterns will provide some ideas and inspiration for your project. Please feel free to return to this page from time to time as we shall be adding more patterns shortly.

Chess-Board

Laid side by side, end to end like the squares on a chess board. Suitable only when using one common size of slab throughout the area to be covered. Usually comprises square slabs only (e.g. 600 x 600 or 450 x 450 etc) but can be effective when using a single size of rectangular slab e.g. 600 x 300, 600 x 450 or 450 x 225 etc. Can also be effective when using 2 contrasting or complimentary colours.
